Today is Wednesday, and while I didn’t step on the scale this morning I’d still like to “weigh-in” with what’s on my mind. I think I may make this a weekly feature where I’ll share both my physical weigh in number from my good ole friend the scale, as well as what’s weighing heavy on my mind as it relates to the weight loss process.
So this week I want to weigh in on the word try. Yes you read that right…the word try. I can’t tell you how much it irritates me to hear people say things such as:
- Trying to lose weight is so hard.
- I’m trying to stay motivated.
- I tried to go to the gym but…
- I guess I’ll try again tomorrow
- What if I try it and don’t like it?
To me you’re either doing it or you’re not. You’re either making it happen or you’re not. In my book there’s no such thing as try. I mean think about. I’m either typing this blog post or I’m not. Try just doesn’t cut it. It sets you up to be wishy washy. Try falls into the excuse category because inevitably when you start a statement off with “I’m trying”, the very next word is usually “but”…and the word but washes all of what you are doing down the drain. It minimizes and cancels out your efforts.
I’ve had to catch myself a few times this week from using the word try. I’ve been replacing it with the word…make. To me the word make is definitive. There’s no if’s, and’s or but’s about it. It’s a done deal. For instance, I’m not trying to change my habits, I’m making small sustainable changes. I’m not trying to track my eating, I’m making the time and the commitment to do so daily. I’m not trying to eat healthy, I’m making better food choices and they are paying off.
I really hope that makes sense and that you will begin to listen to the way you express yourself when it comes to speaking about your journey.
