I am the type of person who needs structure. When you take me away from my daily routine I feel like a fish out to water. Not to mention the fact that once I’m off track it’s hard for me to back on. I am an “all or nothing” person. I’m either all in or all out. So far out that it’s hard to find me because I’m onto my next big thing.
Because I know this about myself I’ve been in planning mode this week. Why? So glad you asked!
As a Meeting Planner (by day), occasionally my job calls for me to travel. As luck would have it this is one of those times when I have to go out of town for a few days to conduct hotel site visits for an event next year. Some may think this is fun and cool. I think it’s an interruption to my daily routine. Don’t get me wrong, I like my job, but I also like the safety net of my routine days to keep me on track.
And so, as I’ve already mentioned, I have a plan. Would you like to hear it? Great! Here it is:
- Continue with my daily walks. I am taking my workout clothes and sneakers and music with me so I can stick to my normal walking schedule while away each day.
- No smoothies for the next few days. Instead I will focus on healthy, clean eating. No fried foods, no junk food, no fast foods. I will eat salad and request for my food to be prepared in the healthiest way. I will also drink water out of the wazoo.
- Upon my return home I will launch into the third phase of my wellness project. I will resume drinking smoothies for breakfast and eat clean for lunch and dinner.
There was a time this unscheduled trip would have set me back to square one after falling off track and having to scramble to get back on. But what I am learning is that a bend in the road doesn’t have to be the end of the road. I’m learning to adapt to the situation at hand, plan to do the best I can do and execute on the plan!

Good for you . . . Fail to plan = plan to fail. Planning does really help, otherwise it won’t likely get done. Tony Robbins also says to visualize your goal, which helps me, too.

Yes! Visualization has helped me to accomplish some things I never thought were possible.

Life is full of unplanned situations, I used to just going with the flow and adapting best I can, the great thing about walking is you can do it anywhere, and healthy eating is actually good to practice in different situations, I think it reinforces the habit. I also congratulate you for anticipating your travel and having a plan for it, I think it a good strategy for staying on track.

Yes Fran, walking is the best! It’s free, it’s low impact and like you said, it can be done anywhere! You hit the nail right on the head about practicing healthy eating in all situations. Thank you for your words of encouragement!!
