In this short series on eating triggers, I will explore what they are, the four categories in which they fall under, and provide some hope by giving some solutions that can help us pull the trigger on our eating triggers. Here’s what I know for sure, our triggers are many. I think at least half this list is a loaded gun for me.
- Eating is a source of relaxation for me.
- I eat certain foods automatically without being aware of it.
- When I feel uncomfortable or upset about something, I eat.
- When I feel “blue” or want to take my mind off my cares or worries, I eat.
- Eating when I feel physical discomfort or pain.
- Being with others when they are eating, regardless of when I last ate.
- I get a real gnawing hunger (which isn’t really hunger at all) when I haven’t had my favorite food for a while.
- Watching television and a commercial comes on advertising my favorite food, or any food for that matter.
- When I’m fatigued and tired.
- Worrying definitely triggers my need to eat.
- I eat to perk myself up.
- I eat when I’m angry about something.
- I eat when I gain weight because I’m depressed about my weight
- I eat when I lose weight because I want to celebrate.
- I eat to calm my nerves.
- I eat when I’m bored and have “nothing” to do.
- I eat for the pure enjoyment of eating.
- I eat because I “love” food.
- I eat because I have nothing else better to do.
- I eat when I’m reading, watching TV or some other activity.
- I eat standing up.
- I eat in the car.
- I eat at my desk.
- I eat out of a box.
- I eat out of a bag.
- I eat because it’s noon time.
- I eat late at night.
This list could go on and on and on. I’m sure there are some triggers that I failed to mention. I would love for you to join the conversation. Which of these factors influence your eating habits and trigger you to eat?
