I’ve said this over and over again. It takes time, energy, and effort to lose weight. I’d also like to add another component to this mix, and that is courage. Huh? I can hear some of you asking, does it really take courage to lose weight? My answer is ABSOLUTELY! Especially for those of us who have a large amount of weight to lose.
“Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says…”I’ll try again tomorrow.”
I love this quote and honestly think it should be the credo for everyone who is on a journey to lose weight. The idea of having courage conjures up images of slaying scary dragons, but as the quote says courage doesn’t always roar. No, courage really is about having the resolve within yourself to do the things that are hard and challenging to do and disciplining your nerves to get it done.
Disciplining your nerves means:
Having the courage to move your body when it is difficult or even embarrassing to do. It’s not easy to go to a gym full of people who are in shape. It’s not easy to run, dance or even walk when you’re extremely overweight. But every time you lace up your sneakers and show up for the game you are disciplining your nerves.
Saying no to the foods you enjoy. Changing a life-long habit of bad eating is not easy. Retraining your taste buds and learning how to make healthy food choices takes practice. Walking away from something you enjoy requires courage to do so. Every time you exercise your power to say no you are disciplining your nerves.
Allowing yourself to be who you are and not continue to shrink behind your self constructed wall of protection, which you have built up over the years is scary and requires courage to break free. For years my weight kept me in bondage and kept me from living the life I so desperately wanted to live. Once I committed to disciplining my nerves I felt free to be authentically me without apology.
Starting over and over and over again. It takes courage to step on the scale to find that you’re gaining weight instead of losing it. It takes courage to restart your program for the 50th time. It takes courage to fall off track and have to find the where-with-all to pull yourself together and try again. Disciplining your nerves means no matter how many times you fall off track, you keep getting back up and trying again!
