Question for you. If you knew that there was no possible way you would ever achieve your weight loss goal (or any goal for that matter), would you still work hard to pursue it?
I’m guessing a large percentage of us would say no. But I’m hoping to get you to change your answer by encouraging you to enjoy the process for the sake of the process alone. Here’s the thing, when you change your focus and begin to appreciate the “process” and all of the benefits you experience along the way, you’ll start to recognize that the rewards are not just in the final destination, but in the daily accomplishments on your way to the ultimate prize. Here’s a few things to keep in mind about enjoying the process:
Focus on the little rewards and benefits that make success worth it. Start taking notice of the changes in your body AND your abilities. Are you able to walk a little faster or further? When you reach the top of the stairs, can you breathe without gasping for air? Are you making better food choices, not because you are “dieting”, but because you want to and because your taste buds are changing. All of these things come with the process.
When working on your goal, be sure to readjust your strategies from time to time in order to continue to reach new heights. Part of the joy of accomplishing something is the thrill you get from actually doing something you never thought you’d be able to do. As you continue to work towards your goal, be sure to set the bar higher and higher, so that when you meet the challenge head on, and destroy it, there will be no room for minimize your accomplishment.
Use your “mini” accomplishments as motivation to keep energized for the journey. I use the word mini, only to distinguish your achievements along the way from your ultimate goal…but there is nothing small or insignificant about any of your triumphs. By setting several mini, but somewhat challenging goals along the way, this helps to build confidence in your ability and builds excitement about conquering your next goal, all of which will keep you motivated to keep going.
Give today’s actions and achievements the credit they deserve. “But I only walked a mile.” What!? Excuse me? There are no “only’s” about it. The fact that you did something, takes you that much closer to reaching your goal, and it will be another day you didn’t quit and you didn’t give up! There are major bonus points in that!
“The main reason for setting a goal is for what it makes of you to accomplish it. What it makes of you will always be the far greater value than what you get” ~ Jim Rohn
