Oh the weather outside is frightful. But the fire is so delightful. And since we’ve no place to go. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
I love that song, but I’m not really in agreement with it’s sentiments today or any other. I know the fall/winter season is just getting started, but oh how I’m longing for spring and summer to be back outside to get my workout on. How about you? Are you an outdoor person? Does it just feel better and more effective when you’re walking, running or riding your bike outside? If so, what do you do when the weather outside is frightful, similar to today? What is your contingency plan, your plan B, your backup plan? Please tell me you have one.
Last Monday, I talked about having a game plan to ride out the storm. Well today I want to encourage you to have a contingency plan (plan B) for when life basically gets in the way and threatens to stall your progress. As you make progress on this 60 Day Challenge and beyond, one of the key things to your success will be your preparedness. In order to remain firmly planted on your square you have to be prepared for whatever life throws at you. If you are used to getting up to go walking everyday, what is your plan for the following interruptions:
- Travel
- Inclement Weather
- Work Deadlines
- The Itis (you know that thing you get when you’ve had too much to eat)
- Oversleeping
- Injury/Illness
- Holiday Madness
The list could go on, but the point is this, as sure as the sun is going to shine somewhere in the world, inevitably there is going to be some kind of obstacle that will pop-up and try to keep you from doing what you PLANNED to do. So my question to you is this: are you going to make excuses, or are you going to arm yourself with a contingency plan well in advance so that you’ll be prepared for whatever comes your way? When you make working out a priority, plan B will come second nature to you. Here are a few suggestions to add to your Plan B Emergency Kit:
- Workout DVD’s are great for getting your workout on right at home. My personal favorite are my Zumba DVD’s!
- Create your own home gym for under $100 using resistance bands, a jump rope, a balance ball, and some dumbbells.
- Who needs equipment when you have your own body weight to provide resistance? Squats, Crunches, Planks, Lunges, etc. can be done anytime, anywhere and are a sure excuse proof form of exercise.
- Got an Ipod? Pull up your favorite dance playlist, and start moving that body like nobody is watching
- If your lower body is injured, workout that upper body or swim
The ideas are endless, but you’ve got to have them in place long before the storm hits so you can hit the ground running and never miss a beat. Just because you normally walk 2 miles everyday for your workout, doesn’t mean you can’t get in some kind of workout when an interruption to what you “normally” do pops up.

Anyone who knows me knows I’m infamous for saying, the best plan to have is plan B. What’s yours?

This post is a great reminder that we have to make a conscious plan for the unexpected. Too often, we allow the challenges we face to deter us from staying focused on our goals. Thanks for the reminder that we already have a lot of the tools in place. We just have to make our Plan B and then do it.

My plan B is always a P90X DVD. I can do it right in my living room!
