Have you ever had to exercise willpower on your weight loss journey?
How did it work for you? It has never worked for me. Quite honestly it takes way too much mental effort to find the willpower to “resist” the temptation of eating a piece of cake for example, because what usually happens is that I eventually give into temptation later down the line when my willpower muscle weakens and I find myself binging like a mad woman.
I have never really brought into the idea of willpower.
To me it’s like riding a scooter. You kick and kick and kick to build up speed and just when you hit your groove, you lose momentum and have to start kicking again. Eventually you completely lose steam and stop kicking altogether, or in this scenario, eat the cake.
Commitment on the other hand is different. Commitment is moving forward with a made up mind.
Commitment is moving forward no matter what. Commitment shows up when you’re finally READY to put in the work, with the understanding that there is no other option. When you are committed, you do what you do because it’s simply what you do. Although there are days when you have to muster up the strength to do it, you just do it because you’re committed.
Here’s the thing, willpower has no place on our journey if we are committed to this being a lifestyle.
Commitment takes all the choices, all the options, all the moods and feelings out of it and you just do what you have to do. What you continue to do on a consistent basis will become a part of your lifestyle and you’ll find that you don’t have to force yourself to do anything, it simply becomes as natural as brushing your teeth.
